About The Artist

Born in Surabaya, August 17, 1959, Motulloh has been actively involved with the Antara Newsroom as a photojournalist since 1990. He teaches photojournalism at the Film and Television Faculty of the Jakarta Art Institute and at the Antara Journalistic Educational Institute. Motulloh has also been a guest lecturer at various higher education institutes throughout Indonesia. In late 1992, Motulloh helped the founding of the Indonesian Photojournalistic Gallery, the only such gallery in South-East Asia. Aside from working as a supervisor at the Photography Bureau of the Antara Newsroom, Motulloh is also the curator of the Antara Photojournalistic Gallery and the editor-in-chief of Indonesia’s only photojournalistic magazine, FANTASMA. Motulloh often judges numerous photographic contests, curates various photographic exhibitions and is involved in many photography events all over Indonesia.

In the beginning, the taught himself the art of photography and then he had the chance to learn about photojournalism in Hanoi (1991) and in Tokyo (1993). He had published four photopraphy books Photojournalism (1991), East Timor: A Photographic Record (1992), Pengawal Samudra (or Guards of the Ocean; 1993), Marinir (or The Marines; 1994). He was the director of photography in the publications of several photography books, Bulungan (1996) and East Timor, Long and Winding Road (2001) the latter is a collection of photography works by Eddy Hasby, a photojournalist at the major Indonesian Newspaper, KOMPAS, Motulloh is now preparing the publications of photography books on Indonesia’s “reformation” movement enttitled Rise and Fall of the New Order and the local refugees, Motulloh’s works was exhibited in the CCF Gallery Jakarta in 1997, in his solo exhibition titled Voice from Angkor. His next photo-ehibition, Carnival, was held in 1999 in the Lontar Gallery, featuring works with satirical-political nuances.

Together with works of Eky Tandyo, Motulloh’s works were then exhibited in the Galeri 9, Yogyakarta, 1202. He has also been involved in numerous photography exhibitions in Indonesia. Motulloh is an active member of the Indonesia Photojournalists Guild.
